The Japan Lens closely follows current events in East Asia, and strives to provide timely and insightful analysis from a Japan perspective. It functions on the belief that quantitative analysis is incomplete without cultural and historical context. The primary contributor, Lefteris Kafatos, applies that filter when observing regional dynamics between Japan, mainland China, Taiwan, and other powers in the Indo-Pacific. He is also interested in recent ties forming between Japan and Europe, and is especially experienced at helping linguists and diplomats bridge cultural divides in international settings.

Kafatos offers the following services:

  • Analysis of dynamics in East Asia from a Japan-informed perspective
  • Presentations on Japanese foreign policy, current events, and politics
  • Policy briefs and defense papers on Japan’s national interest priorities
  • Japanese/English interpretation, translation, and customizable courses
  • Cultural advising for both Japanese and non-Japanese interlocutors
